2. Write Your Grant Proposal / Apply
Depending on the organization / program, you will either mail in an application, write a grant proposal or apply in person for the assistance.
If you are dealing with a government organization, you can sometimes obtain the necessary paperwork from a local library. When you fill out the paperwork, make sure that you fill it out completely. Many times a small error or omission on an application can disqualify your application.

3. Follow-up
If you have sent an application or grant proposal by mail, you should call the organization and make sure they received your package after a week or two to make sure that they don’t need anything else from you.
Ask how long the process typically takes, and see if they can give you a date when you can call back again to follow-up.

In addition to the federal and state government agencies, there are thousands of other organizations out there, and you need to narrow down the list to include only those providers that offer what you need.

As an example, let’s say that I am a woman that wants to open a business. This business collects used computers, upgrades them, and provides them to senior citizens.

After determining my exact goals, I need to identify what are the specific features or qualities of my business.

Some of the categories I should investigate are:
• Programs for women
• Programs that provide to people that expand technology
• Programs for people that assist the elderly
• Educational grants that can help me if I need training on how to upgrade the computers
• Small business resources in my state

Using the resource listings located in other sections of this site, I could now start investigating assistance from sources that provide help in the categories above.

As you are looking through the listings, make a list of organizations, agencies and programs that look like they would benefit you. Also be sure to note the contact information of the agencies (you’ll need that for the next step in finding grants).

Whether you will be seeking money from a government agency or other organization, you will need to be able to clearly convey what you need the money for.

In many circumstances, you will begin your contact with the funding organization with a brief but concise letter outlining the circumstances that caused your financial difficulty.

At the end of the letter you should specifically state how much money you require. A statement containing the amount that you are requesting, similar to “I request a grant in the amount of $2,000 to help me through this difficult period”, should be included towards the end.

This should be a great way to get started in your search for general purpose grants.
